In his book from 1978, Carl Sagan describes the composition and creation process of the Voyager Golden Records – two data disks attached to the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes launched in 1977. They contain image and audio information on Earth, which was sent into space with Voyager as a message to extraterrestrial life forms.

Conceptual book design is the attempt to harmonize the existing structures of the content with the specific structure of the book itself.

But to what extent can a narrative that already exists in terms of content be changed through a design process, and what added value can be generated through this intervention?

The master project „Murmurs of Earth – The Voyager Interstellar Record“,
explores these questions as a redesign of an existing non-fiction book, both in terms of content and design.

In addition to the 118 images that make up the main focus of the work,
the original version of the book includes graphics, tables, and various genres of text.

The result is a redesign of the book, focussing on increased accessibility of the complex thematic content. Complicated content is visualized intuitively through increased readability and a newly structured narrative – all within the contextual and visual tension between emotion and science.
